At this meeting, we invited Cohort A member, Dr. Ho-Lung Li, to share his XR-FLC and course redesign with XR experience in an introductory Mechanical Engineering course. Dr. Li and his student assistant developed a customized VR application to teach important concepts of sand-casting in product development.

At this meeting, the project team and Cohort B members discussed the XR-integrated course redesign implementation logistics planning. A template for course redesign report slidedeck was provided. Cohort A member, Dr. William Whalen, also joined the meeting as a guest speaker to talk about his XR-FLC and course design for an introductory biology class with 3D Organon.

At this meeting, the project team shared the pre-survey collected from Cohort B faculty, and identified some commonly acknowledged barriers and pathways for them to consider. Cohort A member, Dr. Dillon Trelawny was invited as a guest speaker to share his XR-FLC experience and course redesign with XR, and some initial findings of how even simple XR integration could make an impact on students’ learning experience.

At this meeting, we discussed barriers and pathways to Cohort B faculty’s XR integration efforts using a Think/Pair/Share active learning approach. The project team distributed a pre-survey to Cohort B faculty to benchmark their opinions before their redesigned course trials. The project team introduced Spatial.io to the cohort faculty, and explored potential use cases with this immersive and collaborative meta space.

At this meeting, the project team and Cohort B faculty discussed the backward design progress, and how XR-integrated learning experience should also address DEI principles to close learning gaps. The CSU Student Success Dashboard was introduced. Additionally, Dave Shreiner, one of the Cohort B faculty members, made a wonderful presentation on the fundamentals of human vision and XR-enabled visualization.

At this meeting, the project team reiterated the expectations on the XR-FLC and highlighted the importance for Cohort B members to assess the pedagogical impacts of XR on student learning and engagement in their individual course trials. Sample assessment instruments were provided by the project team, and different instructional design approaches were discussed as well. Dr. Fadi Castronovo, external evaluator of the ALIS-XR project, provided a comprehensive overview on educational assessment in VR applications.

Similar to Cohort A experience, the project team introduced Cohort B faculty to backward design, and provided a copy of the Understanding by Design book.

XR-FLC Cohort B Bi-Weekly Meeting 1

At this meeting, the project team provided an overview of the XR technology to bring Cohort B faculty on the same page with nomenclature and fundamentals. An inventory of technology on each project team member campus was presented to help faculty understand the resources and infrastructure available to them. A breakout session was also conducted to recap the search for XR apps and learning contents.

ALIS-XR SJSU Summer Symposium 2022

As part of the Cohort B onboarding, the ALIS-XR SJSU Summer Symposium convened the new cohort members, the project team, and invited guest speakers at SJSU campus to kick off an exciting year of XR exploration. This in-person gathering was strongly recommended by Cohort A faculty and was regarded by both project team and Cohort B members as a great bonding event.
